Abstract

|
The parapharyngeal space is an anatomical potential space, the neoplasm involving this space present a challenge to the clinician with regard to both their preoperative diagnosis and the specific technique of their surgical removal.
Cavernous hemangiomas are more permanent in their existence than the usual capillary hemangiomas. Spontaneous regression may be anticipated in asignificant percentage of those present at birth, whereas it is less likely to occur when the lesion
is
not
present at birth.
Recently, the authors experienced a 61-year-old female patient with the huge cavernous hemangioma involving the parapharyngeal space. This case was treated through cervical-transpharyngeal with mandibulotomy approach. The anatomy of this space,
presenting features, and the surgical treatments were reviewed. (Korean J Otolaryngo1 39 : 5, 1996)
